Volkswagen Teases New Entry-Level EV: ID.1 to Replace UP Hatchback
Volkswagen has officially teased its upcoming entry-level electric vehicle (EV), the Volkswagen ID.1, set to replace the discontinued VW UP hatchback. This new EV is expected to cater to urban explorers with its compact design and off-road-inspired aesthetics.
Market Positioning of Volkswagen ID.1
The Volkswagen ID.1 will be positioned below the ID.2all hatchback. It promises a five-seater configuration with rugged body cladding, aimed at young, urban adventurers. As part of Volkswagen’s EV roadmap, the ID.1 will be one of nine new models by 2027. The teaser reveals a sleek silhouette, slim LED DRLs, and an illuminated VW logo reminiscent of mid-2000s Volkswagen designs.
Platform and Technical Details
Built on the MEB platform, the ID.1 shares its architecture with the ID.2all but will have a shorter wheelbase. It is expected to feature a single-motor battery pack to keep costs down, targeting a price point around Rs. 20 lakh. Additionally, Skoda and Seat are anticipated to launch similar models based on this platform.
Volkswagen plans to produce the ID.2X crossover and ID.2all hatchback at its Spain plant, but details on the ID.1’s production location remain undisclosed.
Volkswagen ID.1 and Its Potential in India
While Volkswagen has not confirmed the ID.1’s launch in India, the brand is developing the India Main Platform (IMP), a localized version of the China Main Platform (CMP). This move hints at potential future EV models tailored for the Indian market.
