The Gen 3 Platform: Key Upgrades

The Gen 3 platform introduces several notable improvements over its predecessors. Here’s a breakdown of the key advancements:

1. Mid-Drive Motor

Ola has replaced the traditional hub motor with a mid-drive electric motor, which is four times more energy-efficient and five times more reliable. This motor integrates the Motor Control Unit (MCU), enhancing performance and efficiency. The mid-drive design also improves weight distribution, contributing to better handling.

2. Chain Drive System

The new scooters feature a chain drive system, replacing the older belt drive. This change results in a 2% improvement in energy efficiency and a 10% boost in acceleration. Ola claims the chain drive is twice as durable as the belt drive and operates just as quietly.

3. Brake-by-Wire Technology

All Gen 3 scooters come equipped with brake-by-wire technology, which uses regenerative braking to increase the range by 15%. This system also extends the life of the brake pads. While most models feature a single-channel ABS, higher variants like the S1 Pro+ get a dual-channel ABS for added safety.

Ola S1X: The Entry-Level Option

The Ola S1X is the most affordable model in the Gen 3 lineup, starting at ₹79,999. It replaces the older S1 model and comes with several upgrades:

Key Features

  • Battery Options: Available in three variants – 2kWh, 3kWh, and 4kWh.
    • 2kWh: Priced at ₹79,999, it offers a top speed of 101 km/h and a range of 108 km (IDC).
    • 3kWh: Priced at ₹90,000, it delivers a top speed of 113 km/h and a range of 176 km (IDC).
    • 4kWh: Priced at ₹1 lakh, it boasts a top speed of 123 km/h and a range of 242 km (IDC).
  • Performance: The 4kWh variant produces a peak power of 9.3 bhp and can accelerate from 0-40 km/h in 3 seconds.
  • Design: Features a lighter chassis, a segmented LCD instrument cluster, and a front disc brake as standard.
  • Colors: Available in five shades – White, Blue, Red, Silver, and Black.
  • Warranty: Comes with a standard warranty of 3 years/40,000 km, extendable to 8 years/1.25 lakh km for an additional ₹14,999.

Ola S1 Pro+: The Flagship Model

The Ola S1 Pro+ is the top-tier model in the Gen 3 lineup, priced at ₹1.55 lakh (ex-showroom). It is designed for performance enthusiasts and offers unmatched power and range.

Key Features

  • Battery Options: Available in two variants – 4kWh and 5.3kWh.
    • 4kWh: Offers a top speed of 128 km/h and a range of 242 km (IDC).
    • 5.3kWh: Delivers a top speed of 141 km/h and a range of 320 km (IDC).
  • Performance: The 5.3kWh variant produces a peak power of 13 kW (17.5 bhp) and can accelerate from 0-40 km/h in 2.1 seconds.
  • Riding Modes: Comes with four modes – Hyper, Sport, Normal, and Eco – catering to different riding styles and conditions.
  • Design: Available in six colors – Porcelain White, Midnight Blue, Passion Red, Industrial Silver, Stellar Blue, and Jet Black.
  • Safety: Features dual-channel ABS and brake-by-wire technology for superior braking performance and efficiency.
  • Warranty: Similar to the S1X, it comes with a standard warranty of 3 years/40,000 km, extendable to 8 years/1.25 lakh km for ₹14,999.

Ola S1 X+: The Mid-Range Option

The S1 X+ sits between the S1X and S1 Pro+ in terms of pricing and features. While specific details about the S1 X+ are still emerging, it is expected to share many of the Gen 3 platform’s advancements, including the mid-drive motor, chain drive system, and brake-by-wire technology.

Pricing and Availability

  • Ola S1X: Starts at ₹79,999 (2kWh) and goes up to ₹1 lakh (4kWh).
  • Ola S1 Pro+: Priced at ₹1.55 lakh (4kWh) and ₹1.70 lakh (5.3kWh).
  • Ola S1 X+: Pricing details to be announced.

Deliveries for the Gen 3 Ola Electric scooters will begin in mid-February, and bookings are now open. Ola is also offering discounts of up to ₹35,000 on its Gen 2 scooters, making it a good time to upgrade to an electric two-wheeler.

Why Consider Ola Gen 3 Scooters?

  1. Advanced Technology: Features like the mid-drive motor and brake-by-wire set these scooters apart.
  2. Improved Efficiency: The new powertrain and chain drive system enhance energy efficiency and performance.
  3. Wide Range of Options: With eight models and multiple battery options, there’s a scooter for every need and budget.
  4. Safety Features: ABS and regenerative braking ensure a safe and reliable riding experience.
  5. Extended Warranty: The option to extend the battery warranty to 8 years/1.25 lakh km provides long-term peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

Ola’s Gen 3 scooters represent a significant upgrade in the electric two-wheeler segment. With their advanced technology, impressive performance, and competitive pricing, they are poised to attract a wide range of buyers. Whether you’re looking for an affordable daily commuter (S1X) or a high-performance scooter (S1 Pro+), Ola’s Gen 3 lineup offers something for everyone.

If priced just ₹50,000-₹60,000 higher than the Ola S1 Air, these scooters could become a popular choice among Indian consumers. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, Ola’s latest offerings are a step in the right direction.
