Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is preparing to challenge the established players in the Indian market with the launch of a new neo-retro roadster. Patent images of this motorcycle have surfaced, revealing intriguing details about the design, components, and potential positioning of this model. Here’s everything you need to know about Honda’s upcoming offering.

Design and Styling

The new roadster embraces Honda’s neo-sports café design philosophy while introducing fresh visual elements. Key design highlights include:

  • Round LED Headlamp: A split configuration that gives it a modern-retro appeal.
  • Compact Turn Indicators: Tiny, round indicators complement the bike’s retro theme.
  • Muscular Fuel Tank: A sculpted tank seamlessly integrates with the bike’s stubby tail section.
  • Streamlined Rear: A swingarm-mounted license plate holder adds to the clean and minimalistic rear design.
  • Single-Piece Seat: Designed for comfort, it complements the roadster’s sporty look.

These design choices ensure the motorcycle stands out in the neo-retro segment, striking a balance between vintage aesthetics and modern functionality.

Mechanical Details

The roadster seems to share its platform with the popular Hornet 2.0 and bears similarities to the Honda CB190R, which is available in select global markets. Here are the key mechanical details:

  • Engine: A single-cylinder, air-cooled powerplant similar to the Hornet 2.0’s 184cc motor. The crankcase design appears more aligned with the CB190R.
  • Chassis: A single downtube frame, consistent with Honda’s lightweight yet durable designs.
  • Suspension: Upside-down forks (USD), which appear chunkier than those on the Hornet 2.0, promising improved handling and stability.
  • Brakes: Petal-type disc brakes with Nissin calipers, ensuring reliable stopping power.
  • Tires: Wider than those on the Hornet 2.0, with a new tread pattern for enhanced grip and performance.

These mechanical updates suggest that Honda is aiming to deliver a well-rounded riding experience tailored to Indian road conditions.

Competitors and Market Positioning

Honda’s neo-retro roadster is set to compete in the affordable neo-retro segment, which includes:

  • Royal Enfield Hunter 350: Known for its retro charm and torquey engine.
  • TVS Ronin: A modern roadster with a mix of retro styling and contemporary features.

If Honda prices this model slightly above the Hornet 2.0 (currently priced at Rs. 1.43 lakh, ex-showroom), it will be well-positioned among its rivals. The added features and premium design could justify a higher price point.

Why This Motorcycle Matters

Honda’s move into the neo-retro segment reflects the growing popularity of retro-themed motorcycles in India. With models like the H’Ness CB350 and the CB300R, Honda has already showcased its capability to deliver on this front. The upcoming roadster could further strengthen its foothold in this niche, catering to riders seeking a blend of style, performance, and affordability.

Expected Launch and Pricing

While Honda has yet to announce an official launch date, the bike is expected to debut soon, possibly within the first half of the year. Pricing details remain under wraps, but an ex-showroom price in the range of Rs. 1.50 lakh to Rs. 1.70 lakh seems likely, given its positioning and features.
