Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, is gearing up for a significant push into the electric vehicle (EV) market. After a cautious entry with its Vida electric scooters, the company is now preparing to expand its portfolio with a range of new electric two-wheelers, including motorcycles and scooters, over the next two to three years.
Splendor Electric Possibilities
One of Hero MotoCorp’s most ambitious projects is the electric version of its iconic Splendor motorcycle, codenamed AEDA. Development of the Splendor Electric has been underway at the company’s Center for Innovation and Technology (CIT) in Jaipur for nearly two years. The motorcycle is slated for launch in 2027 and is expected to target the budget commuter segment and daily business users.
With a production target of 2 lakh units per year, the Splendor Electric is positioned as Hero’s flagship electric motorcycle for the mass market. The model is expected to play a central role in Hero’s efforts to establish a strong presence in the electric two-wheeler segment.
Broadening the Electric Portfolio
In addition to the Splendor Electric, Hero MotoCorp has plans to launch a diverse range of electric two-wheelers, including:
- Vida Lynx Electric Dirt Bike: Designed for international markets, the Lynx is expected to debut in 2026 with a targeted annual production of 10,000 units.
- Acro Learner Dirt Bike for Kids: This model, recently patented in India, aims to cater to younger riders exploring dirt biking.
Premium Electric Motorcycles in Development
Hero is also working on Project ADZA, which will result in two premium electric motorcycles. These models will deliver performance equivalent to 150cc and 250cc internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles. Targeted at young, performance-oriented riders, the motorcycles under this project are expected to hit the market by 2027. Hero is planning an annual production of 50,000 units for these premium bikes.
Production Targets and Market Ambitions
By 2027-2028, Hero MotoCorp is eyeing cumulative EV production of over 500,000 units annually, with electric motorcycles contributing 2.5 lakh units and electric scooters accounting for 2.5-3 lakh units.
The company’s EV lineup will cater to various segments, including budget commuters, dirt bike enthusiasts, and young riders seeking performance and style. Hero MotoCorp’s strategy reflects a balanced approach to addressing both domestic and international markets.
Hero’s Growing Focus on EVs
Hero MotoCorp’s foray into the electric vehicle space aligns with the rising demand for zero-emission vehicles in India and abroad. While the company has so far maintained a limited EV presence, its upcoming models demonstrate a more aggressive approach to innovation and sustainability.
With the launch of the Splendor Electric, Vida Lynx, and other electric motorcycles, Hero MotoCorp aims to solidify its position as a major player in the rapidly growing electric two-wheeler market.
