Title: Program Assistant

Reports To: Community Nutrition Program Director

Classification: Permanent, part-time; variable schedule, approximately 10–20 hours per week

Overview:

FoodRight, Inc. is a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that empowers youth and families to choose foods that sustain lifelong health through gardening, food systems, and culinary nutrition education. We partner with schools and community organizations throughout Milwaukee to teach youth, parents, teachers, and volunteers to grow, cook, and appreciate healthy, plant-forward foods.


We are seeking a reliable and people-centered Program Assistant to support FoodRight’s community kitchen programming at the Riverwest Food Accelerator (RWFA) and assist with in-class culinary nutrition education programs. This position plays a key role in ensuring programs run smoothly, safely, and with a welcoming presence for students, families, partners, and facilitators.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the on-site host and primary point of contact for chefs, facilitators, volunteers, and partner organizations using the space.
  • Support Community Cooks workshops and partner nonprofit use of the Riverwest Food Accelerator, primarily on Saturdays, some Sundays, and occasional weekday evenings (4:00–8:00 PM).
  • Open and close the facility; support kitchen and event set-up and clean-up; manage sign-ins; assist with light food preparation as needed.
  • Assist instructors in Youth Chef Academy and other in-school or community-based culinary nutrition programs (e.g., set-up, clean-up, supporting student cooking groups).
  • Lead or small cooking groups during lessons, as trained and directed by program staff.
  • Prepare ingredients, pack and unpack program bins, and help maintain organized storage of supplies and equipment.
  • Conduct weekly grocery shopping or pickups for FoodRight programs.
  • Provide light administrative and data-entry support related to programming.
  • Support parent/caregiver workshops and occasional community events as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and check-ins as requested.


Requirements

  • Availability to reliably work weekends and early evenings, with a variable schedule averaging 10–20 hours per week; regular weekend availability is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; enjoys hosting, welcoming guests, and working with diverse groups of people.
  • Comfort working with youth and families in school and community settings.
  • Ability to follow and enforce basic kitchen safety and food-handling guidelines.
  • Must have reliable transportation within Milwaukee.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods in a kitchen or classroom environment.
  • Responsible, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Basic computer skills (email and simple data entry).
  • Some culinary skills and comfort working in a kitchen (e.g., knife safety, basic food prep) preferred

Work Schedule & Location:

  • Hours : Variable, averaging 10-20 hours per week.
  • Schedule : Regular Saturdays and some Sundays, plus occasional weekday evenings (e.g., 4:00 - 9:00 PM), depending on programming and space rentals.
  • Additional Hours : Some weekday daytime hours to support classroom programs, shopping, and preparation.
  • Location : Primarily the Riverwest Food Accelerator, 2323 N Commerce St. in Milwaukee, plus Milwaukee Public Schools and other partner sites as needed.


Benefits & Compensation : $18-$20 hourly wage based on credentials and experience
