At EICMA 2024, Royal Enfield revealed the Classic 650 Twin, adding to its expanding lineup of 650cc motorcycles. As the sixth model in this segment, the Classic 650 aims to capture the retro look that has defined Royal Enfield’s brand, while also delivering modern performance.

Familiar Design with Classic Roots

The Classic 650 Twin shares a strong resemblance with the Classic 350, featuring a steel tubular spine frame and weighing 243 kg, making it the heaviest bike in the Royal Enfield lineup. True to its classic styling, the bike has a circular headlamp with side position lights, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a circular tail light, and the signature dual peashooter exhausts. The analogue instrument console is directly inspired by the Classic 350, reinforcing the model’s retro styling. However, this familiarity might feel repetitive to some, especially for those expecting a bolder design evolution in the 650cc segment.

Power and Performance

The Classic 650 Twin is powered by a 648cc parallel-twin engine, producing 46.4 BHP at 7,250 rpm and 52.3 Nm of torque at 5,650 rpm. This engine, also seen in the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650, provides adequate power for highway riding but may leave some riders wanting a bit more punch, especially considering its 243 kg weight. The bike is paired with a 6-speed gearbox featuring an assist and slipper clutch, a practical addition for smoother gear transitions.

Suspension and Handling

The Classic 650 Twin is equipped with 43 mm Showa telescopic forks with 120 mm of travel at the front, and dual shock absorbers with 90 mm of travel at the rear. This setup is balanced for comfort and control, although the bike’s weight could be challenging for some, particularly at low speeds. Braking is handled by 320 mm front and 300 mm rear disc brakes, which provide reliable stopping power. 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels on wire spokes complete the setup, offering a decent grip on various road surfaces.

Practicality and Ride Comfort

With an 800 mm seat height and a 14.8-liter fuel tank, the Classic 650 is accessible for a range of riders and should deliver a reasonable range per tank. However, its weight may be a consideration for those who ride primarily in urban areas or navigate heavy traffic.

The bike’s design emphasis on classic styling over weight reduction or manoeuvrability might not appeal to everyone. For riders prioritising agility or a more dynamic performance, other options in the segment may offer better alternatives.

Color Options and Style Choices

The Classic 650 Twin is available in four colour options:

1. Black Chrome – A reflective shade that highlights classic styling.

2. Bruntingthorpe – A vintage-inspired blue.

3. Teal – A modern color with a touch of nostalgia.

4. Vallam Red – A bold red that contrasts with the retro theme.

Colour Options

These color options offer a range of choices, although the lineup might feel limited compared to some competitors that offer customizable finishes and trim packages.

Market Position and Expected Pricing

Royal Enfield seems to be positioning the Classic 650 Twin as a retro-styled middleweight cruiser intended for fans of classic design. With its familiar look, it appeals to those who value Royal Enfield’s heritage, though it might not attract riders looking for advanced features or a more refined riding experience. The Classic 650 is expected to be priced around ₹3.5 lakh (ex-showroom), making it competitive but potentially expensive considering its feature set.

The Classic 650 Twin delivers on Royal Enfield’s promise of nostalgia and simplicity, though it sticks closely to a familiar design that may not feel innovative. While its classic style, respectable power output, and decent handling make it a suitable choice for traditionalists, riders looking for cutting-edge tech or lighter, more nimble rides might find alternatives more appealing in the growing 650cc segment.
